Notice of Intended Marriage in Adelaide

The Notice of Intended Marriage, usually called the NOIM, is the form you must complete before getting married in Australia.

If you are planning a paperwork-only, registry-style, or simple marriage in Adelaide, this is the document that starts the legal process.

The Core Rule

Your NOIM must be:

  • lodged with your celebrant at least one month before the marriage
  • lodged no more than 18 months before the marriage
  • signed by both parties
  • witnessed by an authorised witness

The notice period starts when the completed NOIM is given to the celebrant.

How to Complete a NOIM

If you need to complete or download the form, use NOIM Easy.

When preparing the form, you will usually need:

  • full legal names
  • current residential addresses
  • dates and places of birth
  • occupation details
  • your parents’ names
  • details of any previous marriage

Supporting Documents

Your celebrant will usually need to sight:

  • a birth certificate or current passport
  • photo ID
  • divorce paperwork if previously married and divorced
  • a death certificate if widowed
  • evidence of any legal name change

Our requirements page and ID guide explain these in more detail.

Who Can Witness the NOIM

If the signing happens in Australia, authorised witnesses include:

  • a registered marriage celebrant
  • a justice of the peace
  • a barrister or solicitor
  • a legally qualified medical practitioner
  • a member of the Australian Federal Police or state or territory police

If the signing happens overseas, authorised witnesses can include:

  • an Australian diplomatic officer
  • an Australian consular officer
  • a notary public
  • other overseas witnesses allowed by the law and current guidance

Remote and Separate Signing

Current marriage guidance allows more flexibility than many couples realise, especially where one or both people are interstate or overseas. But the safest approach is to speak with your celebrant early if:

  • you cannot sign together
  • one person is overseas
  • you want the NOIM witnessed remotely
  • you are close to the one-month deadline

Do not assume a half-completed form is enough. The best rule is simple: get the NOIM completed properly and lodged early.

Common NOIM Mistakes

The most common problems are:

  • names not matching identity documents
  • missing prior marriage details
  • incorrect witness details
  • non-English documents without proper translation
  • waiting too long to lodge the form

Need to Marry in Less Than One Month?

That requires a shortening of time approved by a prescribed authority. Approval is limited to specific categories and is never automatic.
