Getting Married in Adelaide as an Overseas Resident
You do not need to be an Australian citizen or South Australian resident to get married in Adelaide.
Tourists, temporary visa holders, international students, and couples living overseas can all marry in Australia if they meet the legal requirements.
The Main Rules Still Apply
International couples still need to:
- lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage at least one month before the ceremony
- provide the required identity and supporting documents
- be legally free to marry
- attend the ceremony in person
- have two adult witnesses present
If You Are Overseas Right Now
You may still be able to organise most of the process before arriving in Adelaide, including:
- completing or downloading the NOIM through NOIM Easy
- arranging authorised witnessing
- sending copies for review
- confirming the ceremony date once the legal timing works
If you are overseas, do not leave the NOIM until the last minute. International signing, translations, and identity checks can take longer than local bookings.
Documents International Couples Commonly Need
Usually you will need:
- passports
- birth certificates or equivalent proof of birth details
- divorce orders if previously married
- death certificate of a previous spouse if widowed
- legal name change evidence where relevant
- English translations for non-English documents
Our requirements and translation pages cover the basics.
Visa and Immigration
Getting married in Australia does not by itself grant a visa or immigration status. If your marriage relates to migration planning, get immigration advice separately.
What we can help with is the marriage side:
- NOIM preparation
- ceremony timing
- marriage celebrant documentation
- practical Adelaide planning
Why Adelaide Works Well for International Couples
Adelaide is a practical city for simple legal marriages because it is easier to navigate than larger capitals and works well for:
- small paperwork-only ceremonies
- private weekday appointments
- registry-style weddings
- couples arriving for a short stay
