Shortening of Time for Marriage in South Australia
A shortening of time is the formal process used when you want to marry in less than one month after lodging the NOIM.
It is possible in some cases, but it is not routine and it is never guaranteed.
The First Thing to Know
Before a shortening can even be considered:
- your Notice of Intended Marriage must be lodged
- your celebrant must have the basic documents needed to assess the marriage
- you need to fit one of the recognised categories for approval
The Five Recognised Categories
The Marriage Regulations allow a prescribed authority to consider a shortening of time only for specific reasons:
- Employment-related or other travel commitments
- Wedding or celebration arrangements
- Medical reasons
- Legal proceedings
- Error in giving notice
Strong evidence matters. A preference for an earlier date is not enough by itself.
What a Celebrant Can and Cannot Do
We can:
- receive the NOIM
- explain the process
- help you understand the documentation you may need
We cannot:
- approve the shortening ourselves
- guarantee success
- force the authority to accept the application
- turn an urgent request into an exceptional circumstance
Adelaide Couples: Common Situations
Applications are sometimes considered where there is evidence of:
- unavoidable work relocation
- booked travel that cannot reasonably be changed
- urgent medical issues
- legal deadlines affecting the marriage
- genuine error in the notice process
Best Practical Advice
If you think you may need a shortening:
- lodge the NOIM first
- gather evidence immediately
- do not book non-refundable plans until timing is confirmed
- read the official Attorney-General’s guidance on prescribed authorities
Important Reality Check
Most couples are better served by lodging the NOIM earlier rather than planning on a shortening. If the timing can be solved by acting now, that is almost always safer.
